English Barclays Premier League Week 12 review
Wiki Article
Week 12 of the Premier League season, whilst lacking in goals, did not fail to entertain. The Manchester United v Arsenal match was the match on everybodys lips as Robin Van Persie played against his former team for the first time. Other fixtures include Liverpool v Newcastle, QPR v Reading and Swansea v Chelsea.Manchester United 2-1 ArsenalThis fixture was always going to be about Robin Van Persie. After leaving the club he was at for 8 years for one of their biggest rivals, the Arsenal fans made sure he knew what they felt despite Arsene Wenger asking them to respect him. It took the man in question just 3 minutes to stamp his mark on the game as he capitalised on a rare Vermaelen mistake and thumped the ball past De Gea, a goal which he chose not to celebrate in a gesture to the fans that were used to watching his goals flying in at The Emirates.Van Persie had a hatful of chances but perhaps with his old club in the back of his mind he didnt apply the finishes that were needed. After Valencia didnt make the most of chance 4 yards from goal and Wayne Rooney mi sed a penalty, it was Patrice Evra that was in the right place at the right time when he met Rooneys cro s with a close range header. The Red Devils took a short corner, Rooney took over and whipped a ball into the danger area and Evra popped up to nod his first of the season.Arsenal struggled to break a strong a Man Utd team down and Jack Wilshere showed a little too much frustration as he collected his second yellow card after a string of late challenges, perhaps he could have been sent for an early bath much earlier in the game. The sending off didnt do much to change the game but it was Arsenal who scored next as they grabbed a late consolation goal though superstar Santi Cazorla as he fired into the top corner from 12 yards.Arsenals latest defeat leaves them in 6th place with 15 points, their worse start to a season under Wenger. Arsenal fans have showed their frustration in the past and often booed Wenger after a string of bad results, be could be in for some more harsh reviews if their poor form continues.Fulham 2-2 EvertonDavid Moyes was left inconsolable after his side dominated the game but conceded a late goal to surrender all 3 points.Fulham drew first blood when Bryan Ruizs excellently executed free kick came back off the post to hit Tim Howard and end up in the back of the net. They took their lead into the second half but from there Everton began to dominate as they searched for a way back into the game, their break through James Daniels Jersey came in the form of the wild haired Fellaini after good work down the right from Mirallas his cut back was emphatically buried in the top corner by the Belgian. And he was at it again soon after when he out muscled Aaron Hughes, brought the ball the down and found the bottom corner with his strike. Everton fans were jubilant and fans leaving early were grinning from ear to ear with the thought of making the long drive back up north with 3 points but as they were leaving the stadium they wouldve heard and felt Craven Cottage erupt after Steve Sidwell got on the end of a hopeful cro s and snatched a point for the home side.Norwich 1-0 StokeNorwich made it 2 wins in 3 Premier League games as they beat a Stoke side who could only managed three strikes on target in the 90 minutes. The game was that of the scrappy variety as both sides direct styles cancelled each other out. Stoke never looked liked winning and Bradley Johnson took advantage on the stroke of half time as he found the net with a brilliant header from a well delivered cro s from Robert Snodgra s.The game lacked chances as Norwich defended their lead superbly and limited Stokes chances. Stoke are often criticised for their long ball approach seemed to lack creativity in the final third as Norwich did well to close down Charlie Adam and not give him any time on the ball.Sunderland 0-1 Aston VillaSunderland failed to score again and gave Villa a much needed win. Sunderland have only won once in their last 17 games and showed why this was the case as they could only muster one shot on target. Villa had been struggling away from home and havent won on their travels in 14 attempts so Paul Lambert would have been delighted to end such a poor run.Sunderland have only managed 6 goals, the lowest in the league and new signing Steven Fletcher has scored all 6 so it came as no surprise when it was the Scot who had the ball in the net for the home side, only to be correctly called offside by the a sistant referee. Struggling for goals on a personal level was Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor but he ended his 28 game goal drought after he tapped in Bentekes knock down.Swansea 1-1 ChelseaChelsea were knocked off top spot for the first time this season after Man Utds earlier win saw them in second place, and that was where they were to stay after Swansea stunned the West London side with a late equaliser. After both sides failed to create enough chances and show enough creativity in front of goal to take the lead the first half ended a stalemate. The breakthrough came in the 61st minute after sustained Chelsea pre sure resulted in a corner that found Victor Moses unmarked to head the ball past stand in keeper Tremmel. Leon Britton cleared the ball off the line to keep his side within touching distance and that would prove a valuable clearance. Swansea surprised everyone on the 88th minute when record signing Pablo Hernandez curled a brilliant strike into the top corner form the edge of the box. It could have been further misery for the Blues if Cahill hadnt been on guard to block a Danny Graham effort that was heading for the onion bag.Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Wigan AthleticWhite Hart Lane witne sed a coupon buster as Wigan produced an elegant display to surprise their hosts and take all three points. Anybody who hadnt watched the game could be forgiven for thinking that Wigan had snatched a win on the counter attack but that wasnt the case.Spurs were second to every ball as Wigan dominated po se sion for the majority of the match, they were sure in po se sion and confident enough to play out of the back with ease. All they needed to match their performance and they were left frustrated when both Kone and Maloney should have done better with their efforts. They might have been forgiven to expect a Tottenham onslaught but it never came, instead it was Wigan who came out on top in the second half. They finally got their much needed goal in the 56th minute and never looked like conceding as Tottenhams poor performance continued.Andre Villas Boas was booed when he made the decision to substitute top scorer Jermain Defoe for Adebayor Cordarrelle Patterson Jersey as he seemed too stubborn to change his much loved 4-2-3-1 formation. The team were booed again at the final whistle as the expectant Spurs faithful were left frustrated by their team.West Ham 0-0 Manchester CityManchester City maintained their unbeaten run but showed little of the cla s that helped them become league champions last season. West Ham dug deep and perhaps were a little disappointed to not turn one point into three. After the traditional verse of Bubbles just before kick off the West Ham faithful were in a frenzy as they tried to fire up their Irons. It seemed to have worked when Kevin Nolan smashed an amazing volley into the net but the a sistant referee raised his Khalil Mack Jersey flag seemingly incorrectly to the dismay of the West Ham manager. The home side continued to create chances and Yo si Benayoun smashed a volley against the bar. Man City were dominant in po se sion and created 18 attempts on goal but could not make any of them count. It was ex-West Ham favourite Tevez who came closest with a close range effort but he couldnt beat the in form Ju si Jaaskelainen.QPR 1-1 ReadingSundays fixtures started with the leagues worst form teams meeting at Loftus Road, both still searching for their elusive first 3 points of the 2012/13 season. The first half lacked any thing to write home about except when QPR old boy Kaspars Gork s scored with an acrobatic volley after the ball came back off the bar. Sean Morrisons looping header from a corner looked to be going in but rebounded cleanly off the bar into the path of Gork s who put his Rangers past behind him and he buried his chance.QPR came out rejuvenated in the second half and showed signs why they should perhaps be further up the table. It was Djibril Ci se that levelled the game on 66 minutes when he showed great composure with his first touch and stroked the ball into the net with his second. Adel Taarabt should given the home side all three points when his effort was saved by the Reading keeper, Taarabt has proven a match winner time and time again but this time wasnt meant to be.QPR chairman Tony Fernandes has came out publicly to support his manager but only time will tell if this proves to be the dreaded vote of confidence.Liverpool 1-1 NewcastleThe 4 oclock kick off saw Newcastle travel to Anfield to face a Liverpool side looking to turn performances into wins. Newcastle havent won away from St James Park this season and the first half showed why as they were poor in every department and Liverpool dominated. That was until, against the run of play, Yohan Cabaye lashed a superb strike past Brad Jones to give his side the lead at the break.Liverpool continued to pre s as they had throughout the first half without finding their way past a stubborn Newcastle defence. It was only a touch of brilliance from Luis Suarez that gave them the equaliser. The Liverpool striker has been on every bodys lips this season, this time for the right reasons as he plucked the ball out of the sky, glided past Coloccini with ease and out foxed keeper Krul to allow himself an easy tap in. Liverpool continued to dominate as they had all game but couldnt find a winner but the game was marred by an awful challenge from Coloccini on Suarez when the Argentine defender violently came through the back of Suarez with his studs raised.Liverpool couldnt make the most of their one man advantage and the game ended in a draw. Another frustrating day for the home side as they were by far the better team but once again couldnt take their chances in front of goal.
